Triathlons: the new golf?

“The Economic Sociology of Triathlons” argues that triathletes make excellent business and personal contacts by the inherent nature of their triathlete status. While golf is still widely known as the sport of professionals, Brooke, the author, claims that triathlons should now top golf as the preferred sporting venue. Brooke narrows the reasoning behind this finding down into several traits triathletes share that most other people do not: triathletes have money, endure pain, share long periods of time to network, and respect one another.

Triathalons are highly expensive. Brooke finds that:

“The average annual income of an Ironman participant is nearly $160,000, while the average golfer makes a measly $100,980 a year, according to Golf.com’s 2009 Survey.” Continue reading

Text To Donate: How Nonprofit Organizations Can Improve

Todd Cohen, editor and publisher of Philanthropy Journal, wrote about the potential for increased use of digital media as a means of charitable giving on the Stanford Social Innovation Review blog.  In the weeks following the Haiti earthquake disaster, text messaging has emerged as a popular vehicle for donation.  I have seen many advertisements encouraging individuals to text to a certain number to donate to the Haiti relief effort.  According to Mr. Cohen, much of this has been facilitated through Twitter.

It is interesting to watch the emergence of new ways of doing various things in organizations.  Online giving, for instance, developed “in the days after 9/11, Hurricane Katrina and the tsunamis in Asia” (Cohen).  What was once a new and revolutionary way of seeking donations has become mainstream.  Is that the future of donating via text messaging as well?  It is a very feasible possibility, but there is one thing that may hinder it: the lack of business acumen that plagues many non-profit organizations. Anatomy of a “concept” for conceptography

A student asked me to describe more what goes into a concept for the conceptography project.

The inspiration for this is the research tool called the annotated bibliography. The AB works effectively when you have ot integrate and keep trac of a wide variety of sources.  I find it a key research tool and technique to use between reading and writing papers.  The AB serves as the connective tissue of your thinking.

The conceptography is designed to allow you to build your own connective tissue between reading the book, Organizations and Organizing and writing across the class, on the blog and in your papers.

Google vs. China

I decided to use this article to support our definition of an organization, more specifically their function in our modern global world.  A quick summary of the article; Google has decided to stop its censoring of its Chinese web search service.  This is a truly remarkable challenge to Chinese communism that none have issued before.  Other companies like Microsoft and Yahoo are content to censor their materials in China as long as they can sell their products and make money.  This is an out right, public challenge that an organization will not bend to a national government because what they are asking is not right.  This clearly demonstrates that although locating towards the middle of the macrological and micrological scale, organizations reach can extend to the extremes. ( in this case to the macrological extreme)   Continue reading
